A Famous First
John Uelses cleared the bar at 16 feet and 1/4 inch at the first over-16-feet, indoor pole vault competition in the U.S. on February 2, 1962, at the Millrose games in New York City. Uelses bested that jump by a half-inch the very next night at the Boston Athletic Association games in Boston, Massachusetts.
