A Famous First

Ann Franklin, Benjamin Franklin's sister-in-law, became the first woman newspaper editor in the U.S. When her son, James Franklin, Jr., died on August 22, 1762, Ann Franklin took over the Newport Mercury in Newport, Rhode Island, and edited the paper until her death on April 16, 1763.
